Composiotnal Profile

Cluny is a composer writing for film and television, multimedia, and performance. He has written and produced quite a few television film scores for IWC Media and Mentorn Media documnetary series for BBC 2, BBC 1 and BBC 2 Scotland, Five, and Discovery Networks Europe. He recently finished working on Clans, 3 x series of 6 x 40' Mentorn Scotland documentaries for BBC Scotland for which he is published by EMI. He part time lectures in post modernism and music history at the SAE Institute Glasgow Campus, a worldwide media production college accredited by Middlesex University.

He originally studied post graduate compositional studies under James Macmillan at the RSAMD in 1992, and electro-acoustical with Janet Beat. After writing an opera for TRAMWAY in 1996, and winning an EU Music Development Award from Glasgow City Council, Cluny went on to write music internationally for commercial companies including Vidal Sassoon, BASF, Schwarzkopf GmbH, and Lipfinity Maxfactor.

Cluny is currently working on a number of performance and recording projects which bring together the ways in which he is influenced by film music, performance, opera, symphony, prerecorded sound, sound design, voice, abstraction, post modernism, and the world around him.

He is making works which are created out of processes which are not so much about writing pieces from beginning to end, but more about building core blocks of musical material. These are organised in way where they can be rearranged and re-contextualised for very different production contexts, either scored or recorded, and for different performance, library, or broadcast projects.

This work draws on a wide array of influences and approaches, and their creative combinations, which he describes as being 'imaginary cut to picture structures.... they are non narrative constructs which can embody narrative, and illuminate hidden realities between acts of expression, situation and language'.

Cluny is applying these structural ideas to generate extremes within his sound-world: extremes between situation (as in situationalism and moment form), and between materials, (both physically made, and as musically constructed) and manifested in staged works, opera, installation, and sculpture exhibition. His aim is to produce works which express a dynamic relationship of the contemporary world around us, and to communicate to an audience unafraid of the new.
