Taking composition lessons is about learning the techniques and processes involved in writing new original musical works. It is the exploration and discovery of relationships between sounds, form, harmony, rhythm and instrumental arrangement. It is the pursuit of creatively manipulating these elements and transforming them into musical ideas through notation. As a composition teacher, I can introduce students to new ways of thinking about ideas, and the driving forces that makes music music. I teach students how to develop their work and interests, by bringing to them an array of creative tools with which they can learn how to constructively reference their work, music, arts history, cultural developments and current creative practice. Students learn how to interpret their creativity. As they develop as composers they develop phylosophical approaches to form, harmony, rhythm, instrumentation and an understanding how to apply those ideas to their own works.
